Picking Logic

This hierarchy applies to bin allocation picking logic:

  1. Always pick from specific bins assigned as picking bins on the Item Bin Maintenance form, in the order in which they appear in the table.
  2. Pick from any bin (both mixed and non-mixed) of the primary bin type of the stocking location's storage profile the bin type at the top of the storage profile's picking hierarchy table.

The process selects bins containing inventory in order of the least quantity on hand to the greatest. Greentree Desktop always depletes partially-filled bins before picking from bins that are full.

  3. The process repeats for the storage profile's secondary bin type, third bin type, and so on.
  4. If the User Preferences option Enable bin suspense on picking is selected, Greentree Desktop assigns any outstanding quantity to pick to bin suspense if the stocking location has sufficient quantity to satisfy the order, but the sum of bin quantities is insufficient.

If Enable bin suspense on picking is not selected, you can't complete the transaction if Greentree Desktop cannot find bins from which to pick the full order line quantity.

Note: If a Bin Receiving Area is set up and inventory is available at that location, Greentree Desktop does not suggest picking from it. For example, the Bin Receiving Area is considered protected in terms of it being available to pick from.

If a Bin Packing Area is set up, inventory is temporarily transferred to the packing area once it updates as picked. This ensures the pick bin capacities are updated in real-time to support the Bin Replenishment and Put Away Process. Quantities are adjusted from the packing area when the lines are invoiced.

Serial/Lot Exceptions

If the item being picked is serial/lot controlled, these exceptions apply:

  • If the SO Module Control option Serial/lot numbers required at SO Entry is selected, users must specify the serial/lot numbers when the sales order is entered. Bins are allocated as a consequence of if the serial/lot numbers are located.
  • Items are always picked in expiry date order if expiry dates are in use.
  • If expiry dates are not in use, serial/lot items are picked based on the oldest receipt date.

In all cases, the picking hierarchy is overruled and bins are assigned based on serial/lot specific rules.
