Statutory Sick Pay

Greentree can process Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) by tracking the sick days taken by the employee. The SSP lines will be automatically created for the correct statutory amount.

To set this up, you need two transaction types:

  1. Sick leave for recording the days an employee is sick
  2. SSP for payment of SSP (set as not Changeable)

The Sick line must have the Apply SSP option selected, and dates must be compulsory for this transaction type. The SSP transaction type must be set as a type of Amount.

To determine the working days for an employee, they must have a working calendar setup specifying the days of the week that are worked. This can be done at a company level by setting a default on Module Control, or for individual employees by setting it on the balance tracking tab.

On the pay, an employee will have Sick lines entered for days that they are sick. When you save or click the Calculate SSP button, Greentree looks at the employee's record, determines if the sick lines form a PIW, and if there is a previous linked PIW. If SSP is payable, Greentree generates the SSP line and calculates how much SSP is payable.

To create a history of sick PIW's, click the Earnings history button.

Note: SSP is not stopped after 28 weeks, so the Sick line must only have dates up to the 28 weeks.

If the Sick line has a zero value, it is hidden on the pay slip.

An SSP line can be a JC line and the job that it posts to must be setup on the HMRC Configuration form. When creating a JC line, you cannot use the offset.

Payment of SSP assumes the following the employee:

  • Has given correct notice of being sick
  • Has already done some work for you
  • Is not pregnant or is outside the disqualifying period for Statutory Maternity Pay or Maternity Allowance whilst sick
  • Was not in legal custody or prison when they became sick
  • Is not working outside the United Kingdom, and you are not a foreign based employer with no place of business in the United Kingdom
  • Is not involved in a trade dispute
  • Was not getting Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disability Allowance within eight weeks before becoming sick
  • Does not hold a 8/52 week linking letter from the Department for Work and Pensions
  • Is not a member of the Armed Forces
