Online Quiesced Backup

You can access the online backup utilities in Greentree Desktop from the Process > Task Scheduler menu. Select the Backup Database Online task from the list.

You can run the backup immediately or scheduled it to run weekly or daily. The default setting is to Run now.

You must specify the backup target directory for:

  • Database files. This directory must exist on the server. If it does not exist, Greentree Desktop creates it.
  • The files in the \bin, \bin64, and \webroot folders. The backup folders created during the process have the same name as the live system and bin directories.

Click More to select variables, including the date and time, for naming the backup folders.

Note: You shouldn't back up the database to the same drive as the database itself. If anything affects the common drive then both the database and the backup is lost. Even if the backup is copied elsewhere, perform the original backup to a different volume on the server. You can have a disk resident backup as a fall back.

MYOB does not recommend performing a backup over the network to a mapped drive or a UNC path.

The Backup Database Online task defaults backup options, displayed above. The Quiesce database (read only) option is selected by default. Other options are:

Back up binaries and web resources

This option is selected by default. This option backs up the Greentree Desktop directory and these folders:

  • \bin
  • \bin64
  • \webroot

Note: If you previously set the \webroot folder as a directory to include in the backup by clicking the Select additional directories button, Greentree Desktop does not back up that folder twice.

Select additional directories

Click this button to include external attachments and other folders on your workstation in the backup.

Compress Database

Select this option to compress database files as they are backed up.

WARNING: A compressed backup cannot be subsequently certified. You shouldn't compress the database during a backup.

Verify Object Checksums (recommended)

Select this option to verify the integrity of the objects in the database during the backup process.

Quiesce Database (read only mode)

Select this option to put the database into read only mode. No database transactions can happen for the duration of the backup.

Include System Files (recommended)

This option is selected by default. It backs up system database files and user (data) database files.

Certify Backup (recommended)

This option is selected by default. It certifies the files that have been backed up when the process is complete.

Verify Backup File Checksums (recommended)

This option is selected by default. It performs a file-level checksum verification with the backup. This ensures that the files that were backed up were correctly written to disk and that no hardware problem has injected problems or corrupted the backup files during the backup process.

Running the Backup

After selecting options, start the backup by selecting Add to task queue. The backup task runs through the active task queue.

If the user who starts the backup (or any other nominated person) wants to receive an email notification when the backup task has completed, select the option to Send an email when this task is finished on the Task Scheduling form before the backup task runs. The email sent to the nominated address indicates whether the backup was successful or not.

When the database is being backed up in quiesced mode, a message indicating the a backup is in progress displays if users try to edit objects in the database, save transactions, or run any processes.
