Retail Commerce: Syncing Tax Categories with Shopify

With MYOB Acumatica 2025.2.1, you can now synchronize tax categories with your Shopify stores for centralized tax management. This means less time spent, lower maintenance headaches, and fewer costly errors. The payoff? Seamless operations and smarter, stress-free tax compliance.

How It Works

If you’re using the Shopify Plus plan, you can apply tax codes—unique labels—to the products and variants in your store. Tax codes identify a product’s category and determine the tax rules that apply to it. External tax services integrated with Shopify can use these tax codes to automate tax calculation and reporting.

Now you can easily manage and update these tax codes directly in MYOB Acumatica and seamlessly sync them to your products in different Shopify stores. This enhancement ensures consistency across platforms and takes the guesswork out of tax compliance.

Maintaining Tax Codes

In MYOB Acumatica, you define Shopify tax codes as tax categories on the Tax Categories (TX205500) form. You then assign these tax categories to each stock, non-stock, and template item on the Stock Items (IN202500), Non-Stock Items (IN202000), or Template Items (IN203000) form, as shown below.

Syncing Tax Codes

When you sync a stock, non-stock, or template item with the Shopify store, the connector assigns the tax code to the corresponding product by using the tax category specified for the item. You can see below that the connector also marks the product as taxable when it assigns the tax code. However, you can override this by clearing the Charge tax on this product check box.

Tip:
If the tax category being synchronized is mapped to FALSE in the substitution list, the system won’t mark the product as taxable. The substitution list is specified in the Tax Categories box on the Orders tab of the Shopify Stores (BC201010) form.

Excluding Tax Categories from Synchronization

Want to exclude tax categories from synchronization for an entity? You can do that by using export mapping. Add a rule with the following settings (also shown below) to the entity on the Export Mapping tab of the Entities (BC202000) form:

  • External Object: Product -> Product Variants
  • External Field: Avalara Tax Code
  • ERP Object: <<Unmap>>
